Economy, Social Cohesion and the Environment

SI Economic Committee met in London

06 June 2008

Meeting in London on Friday 6 June, the SI Committee on the Economy, Social Cohesion and the Environment held its final discussion in advance of the XXIII Congress of the Socialist International.

Members of the Committee considered the report to be presented to the Congress under the theme “Setting the global economy on a new path: to bring growth and opportunities for all”. The document follows the series of meetings held during this period in different regions of the world and will take into account the fundamentally altered dynamics of the world economy in the last few years.

At the meeting, chaired by Christoph Zöpel (Germany, SPD), Chair of the Committee, the participants revised the document, emphasising the need to express a clear message with proposals and concrete measures for multi-level governance of economic policy at the state level, at the supra-state regional level and at the global level. In the report to be presented to the Congress, the following areas will be highlighted at the global level, the need for a more democratic United Nations system, achieving a global welfare statehood, fairer global trade and effective distribution and production of raw materials and energy, reforming the global financial markets, financing development, working for global inclusive and equitable labour, and, the responsibilities of the private sector in a globalised world.
