The Socialist International Committee for Latin America and the Caribbean, meeting in La Antigua Guatemala on 23-24 March 2009,

1. Considering the damage inflicted by the food crisis in Haiti, the oil crisis, the consequence of cyclones in the region, the social and economic impact of the international financial crisis all of which has increased the suffering of the Haitian people;

2. Considering the perspective of a deterioration in the social and political climate in the country due to the potential arrival of thirty thousand deported people from the United States;

The SI Committee for Latin America and the Caribbean calls on the President of the United States, Barack Obama, to postpone this decision taken by the Bush Administration, granting the status of temporary residence to these thirty thousand Haitians. This will provide a big support to the Haitian people in their efforts to build democracy and secure economic and social progress.
