LISBON COUNCIL - Socialist International's 50th Anniversary

29-30 June 2001

STATEMENT ON RUBEN BERRIOS

Original: Spanish

The Socialist International meeting in Lisbon expresses its solidarity with Rubén Berríos, an Honorary President of the SI and President of the Puerto Rican Independence Party, PIP, who is imprisoned in Puerto Rico for having carried out acts of peaceful civil disobedience on land occupied by the United States Navy on the Puerto Rican island of Vieques.

The Council recognises Rubén Berríos’s leadership in the struggle for peace and human rights in Vieques as well as his dedication over the years to the cause of complete decolonisation and sovereignty of Puerto Rico.
