RESOLUTION ON THE CRISIS IN COTE D’IVOIRE

Original: French

Côte d’Ivoire is today cut in two after an attempt at a coup d’état on 19 September 2002 against the democratically elected lawful authorities.

As has always been the case in a question of recourse to arms to overthrow a legal and legitimate government, the SI vigorously condemns the coup attempt in Côte d’Ivoire. In reality it sets a dangerous precedent which could put a brake on the democratisation process in Africa.

That is why the SI reaffirms its unequivocal support for the legal and legitimate authorities in Côte d’Ivoire and welcomes all initiatives, those already taken and those being planned, to start dialogue and find a political solution to the crisis.

The SI also welcomes the holding of the round table in Paris on peace in Côte d’Ivoire, encourages all interested and concerned parties and invites them to make every possible effort to find a lasting solution in line with legal principles and norms and international usage.

The SI calls on the international community to back this process of peace through discussion and dialogue and to aid the economic and social recovery of Côte d’Ivoire.
