RESOLUTION ON THE SITUATION IN COTE D’IVOIRE

The Council of the Socialist International, meeting in Johannesburg on 15-16 November 2004, deeply concerned by the prevailing situation in Côte d’Ivoire, recalling the overwhelming responsibility of the armed rebellion and its operatives in the Ivorian crisis, deplores the violation of the ceasefire by the national armed forces of Côte d’Ivoire (FANCI):

• Reminds the parties that respecting the Linas-Marcoussis and Accra III Agreements is the only legitimate way out of the crisis, and appeals to them to work to this end;

• Appreciates the initiative of the African Union and supports the mission entrusted to President Thabo Mbeki;

• Notes that the United Nations is equally involved in dealing with the situation in Côte d’Ivoire, mindful that the mandate of the UN clearly includes disarmament while the process of political reforms must be pursued and accelerated;

• Calls on all parties to take immediate steps to restore peace through dialogue;

• Agrees to send a mission of the SI to meet with President Gbagbo and the leaders of the Ivorian Popular Front, FPI, in order to encourage dialogue between all the parties in conflict.
