LISBON COUNCIL - Socialist International's 50th Anniversary

29-30 June 2001

RESOLUTION ON PAKISTAN

The Socialist International repeats its call to the government in Pakistan to immediately take steps to end military rule by announcing a date for free and fair elections open to all parties and candidates, by releasing political prisoners and by lifting the ban on political activities.

It also voices its concern regarding the imprisonment of those not convicted of any crime and about pressure on the judiciary by the government. It calls for full respect for human rights and fundamental freedoms.
