Members of the SI Committee on the Economy, Social Cohesion and the Environment gathered in Geneva at the headquarters of the International Labour Organisation, ILO, for a meeting of the Committee on 13-14 December 2002, chaired by Christoph Zöpel (Social Democratic Party of Germany, SPD).
Discussions centred on the outcome of the World Summit for Sustainable Development held in Johannesburg, WSSD, on 26 August - 4 September 2002, and on a continuation of the Committee’s work on "Governance in a Global Society - A Social Democratic Approach". At the opening session, participants heard contributions from Larry Kohler representing the Director-General of the ILO Juan Somavía, and from Mike Moore, former Director-General of the WTO.
A Statement on the outcome of the WSSD was agreed by the Committee and will be presented to the SI Council at its forthcoming meeting in Rome. A further text, on the world economy, will be prepared by the Committee at a meeting to be held on the eve of the Council in Rome.
